Constipation in children explained

AJP - June 2021 - Practice update

Constipation in children is a common condition and presentation in community pharmacy. Early assessment and intervention are necessary as constipation can cause considerable distress to the child and parents, may become chronic and is costly to the health system. Thorough assessment including inquiries about the child’s history and symptoms is essential, with a view to identifying any red flags that require referral. As long as the child is pain free, parents can in most cases be reassured that some infrequency in defecation is normal.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  • describe the pathophysiology of constipation;
  • describe the referral points for children with constipation;
  • describe the pharmacological options available for treatment of constipation in children.
