Course description

Family Planning NSW remains passionate about supporting doctors’ professional development during this period of social distancing. We are pleased to offer this course in a blended format combining self-paced online learning with interactive web-based, supervised practical session.

Learn or refresh your knowledge about the contraceptive implant, Implanon NXT and the skills to safely insert and remove the device. This combination of online self-paced learning and supervised hands on training is suitable both as an introduction for new inserters or a refresher for clinicians who have completed the foundational course on Implanon NXT and wish to enhance and maintain their confidence in inserting and removing the implant. A distance practice kit will be provided.

Content includes:

  • Contraceptive options and their efficacy
  • Long acting reversible contraception (LARC) including contraceptive implants 
  • Pharmacokinetics of Implanon NXT
  • Indications and contraindications
  • Initiation of the contraceptive implant including client consultation, administration of local anaesthetic and the safe insertion and removal of the implant in a primary care setting
  • Management of common side effects

Following the completion of this workshop, participants must ensure they have adequate professional indemnity insurance to implement Implanon NXT insertion and removal into their scope of practice.

Course structure

Completion of the online learning is essential before arranging a supervised web-based practise session.

Pre-workshop activities

Completion of online learning (3-4 hours). Participants have access to the online learning 4 weeks prior to attending a supervised web-based practise session. Participants are only eligible to arrange a supervised practise session when they fully complete the online activities.

Supervised one on one web-based practise

Participants practise insertion and removal of Implanon NXT on a model arm under the supervision of a Family Planning NSW clinical facilitator in a virtual classroom setting, followed by an assessment of competency. A distance practice kit will be provided. Participants are requested to provide their own computer or smartphone for video conferencing, as well as syringes and scalpel.

Eligibility / Prerequisite

Current registration with the Medical Board of Australia or Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.


The assessment requirements include satisfactory completion of online learning, and successful completion of supervised web practise session.

Course cost


Recognition / Accreditation

Participants who attend the whole training and successfully complete the assessment will be issued with a Statement of Completion.

This course is equivalent to a minimum of 5 hours to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for CPD.
