Contraceptive Needs of Women Aged Over 40 course
This session will explore the different contraceptive needs for individuals over 40, and which methods of contraception are safe and suitable for women in this age group. It will also discuss when to stop contraception and how it should be used alongside hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- 10.6.1 Demonstrate understanding of when contraception can be safely stopped
- 10.6.2 Demonstrate understanding of which methods are appropriate for peri-menopausal women and may help with menopausal symptoms
Individuals over 40 often have different contraceptive needs to those under 40.
Dr Boog is a consultant in Community Sexual and Reproductive Health in an integrated sexual health service in Fife. Prior to undertaking CSRH training in the East Midlands, she spent 3 years working as a Sexual Health and HIV registrar in Australia. Her special interests include complex contraception, medical education and sexually transmitted infections.
Dr Boog is a Faculty-Registered Trainer, a member of the MFSRH OSCE examination group and lead question writer for the Multi Specialty Recruitment Assessment for CSRH. She has contributed to FSRH CEU guidelines on 'Contraception for women over 40' and 'Combined hormonal contraception' and written accompanying summaries of these for primary care journals. She is the author of the RCOG e-learning module 'Sexual Health and HIV'.
