This session will outline the prevalence, distribution, differential diagnosis, aetiology and treatment, to enable a management strategy to be drawn up for the dental team to treat patients with dentine hypersensitivity.

Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a chronic, episodic dental pain condition characterised by short, sharp, pain arising from exposed dentine in response to stimuli, which cannot be ascribed to any other form of dental defect or pathology.

Before commencing this session you should have a basic knowledge of:

  • Tooth structure
  • The relationship between enamel, dentine and pulp
  • Periodontal disease

Dent) Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Bristol Dental School & Hospital.

Dr Nicola West is Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (Periodontology) at the Bristol Dental Hospital and School. She undertakes specialist practice in both the hospital and private practice setting and holds a teaching appointment at the University of Bristol for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional education courses.

Nicola leads the Clinical Trials Unit team in the Bristol Dental Hospital, working closely with industrial sponsors as well as with university colleagues in the fields of dentine hypersensitivity, tooth wear, oral health care products, bleaching, staining and plaque and gingivitis. Nicola is a regular speaker internationally in these fields.
