Diabetes Care | Care of People with Metabolic Problems: Diabetes | Managing Multiple Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetes
Managing Multiple Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetes
Session Overview
Description
This session discusses the management of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with diabetes.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the benefits of treating the cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes
- Explain the evidence behind risk factor control
- Describe when and how to initiate treatment for cardiovascular risk factors
- Discuss the positive and negative aspects of tight glycaemic control
Type 2 diabetes is a common condition that is managed largely in primary care; the management of type 2 diabetes encompasses much more than glycaemic control.
Patients with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk of macrovascular and microvascular complications, so the management of diabetes is targeted at screening for and preventing these complications which include myocardial infarction, amputation, kidney failure and loss of vision. Reversible risk factors, such as hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and hyperglycaemia, are particularly important [1](read details regarding the reference).
This session will discuss the monitoring and management of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with diabetes.
