Overview

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious and potentially life-threatening metabolic disturbance that may occur as a result of hyperglycaemia in patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This short module provides an overview of what Diabetic ketoacidosis is, the pathophysiology of it, signs and diagnosis, and the treatment of Diabetic ketoacidosis. It briefly considers preventative measures. 

The module is aimed at anyone providing nursing care to patients at risk of developing this potentially life threatening condition.

  • Identify the symptoms of DKA.
