DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS & RED FLAGS IN LOW BACK PAIN

Overview

This interactive virtual classroom will discuss and highlight serious medical conditions that could first present as back pain including:

·         Back pain and collapse - focus on aortic catastrophes, PE

·         Back pain and anticoagulation - retroperitoneal bleed, epidural haematoma

·         Back pain and fever - epidural abscess, discitis / osteomyelitis, pyelonephritis

·         Back pain and recent procedure - e.g. infection/bleed post spinal, nerve root injection

·         Back pain and suspected malignancy or pathological #

The second part of the program will highlight red flags and identification of them in the assessment and management of LBP.

The discussion will include

·          newer red flags associated with MSCC and CES,

·          the relevance of some red flags

·         appropriate questioning, documentation and escalation pathways

 

 

Presenters

Deborah Lenaghan: Deb Lenaghan is a physiotherapist with over 35 yrs. experience in health care. With experience in a wide range of settings including private practice to elite sport, Deb currently works as a primary contact physiotherapist in emergency. A major focus of interest is the development of capability for physiotherapists to pursue extended scope of practice in Australia. Deb is one of a number of physiotherapists in QLD health actively involved in trial of physiotherapy prescribing.

Dr. Edward Burns: ‘Dr Edward Burns is an Emergency Physician (FACEM) at both St George and Liverpool Hospitals, and a Specialist in Prehospital & Retrieval Medicine for CareFlight, NSW. Dr Burns is a conjoint lecturer at UNSW and is one of the main authors of the ‘Life In The Fast Lane’ Emergency Medicine blog.
