This course explores how genetic conditions are inherited and how to recognise the common modes of inheritance in a family history.

Learning objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • explain the difference between a germline and a somatic variant;
  • describe the common modes of inheritance for genetic conditions;
  • identify the most likely mode of inheritance based on the pattern of affected people in a family history; and
  • calculate the recurrence risks for autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive and X-linked conditions.

The session will also cover how the recurrence risks are calculated for each type of inheritance.
