The Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC) course is a cornerstone of anaesthesia training in Australia and New Zealand, designed to prepare anaesthetists for the complex and high-stakes scenarios they may encounter in clinical practice. Scheduled for 4–6 March 2026 at Perth Children’s Hospital in Nedlands, WA, this intensive program runs over two and a half days and is structured into five modules. EMAC is a compulsory requirement for trainees in the ANZCA anaesthesia training program and for international medical graduates seeking specialist recognition. It is also highly recommended for consultant anaesthetists and GP anaesthetists who wish to refresh and refine their crisis management skills. The course employs advanced simulation-based learning, immersing participants in realistic scenarios that replicate anaesthetic emergencies such as airway obstruction, anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, equipment failure, and other perioperative crises. Through these simulations, participants practice leadership, teamwork, communication, and decision-making under pressure. The program emphasizes not only technical proficiency but also non-technical skills, recognizing that effective crisis management requires collaboration, situational awareness, and clear communication. Facilitated by experienced instructors, EMAC provides structured debriefing sessions after each scenario, allowing participants to reflect on their performance, identify strengths, and develop strategies for improvement. The course is supported by ANZCA’s commitment to fostering safety and high-quality patient care in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, and pain medicine. By the end of the program, participants will have enhanced their ability to respond to emergencies with confidence, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes. EMAC is widely regarded as one of the most impactful training experiences for anaesthetists, combining evidence-based education with immersive practice. It not only fulfills mandatory training requirements but also serves as a valuable professional development opportunity for anaesthetists at all career stages.
