Back to Basics on Assessment – Why it Matters
Recognising that a patient’s condition is deteriorating and responding appropriately and with timeliness to their needs is imperative to providing safe and high-quality nursing care. Hasty identification in the decline of the patient, followed by prompt and effective action can minimise the occurrence of adverse events such as unexpected death, respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest. Your ability to recognise and respond to changes in a patient’s condition early promotes holistic healthcare practice and is a high priority if acute illness is to be averted. This session will update your clinical nursing assessment skills to support optimal outcomes and best practise nursing care.
Newly Diagnosed Diabetes? How Nurses Can Help
A person who has recently been diagnosed with diabetes is often confused and worried. They may seek information from many sources. However, professional face-to-face communication is essential in these early days. This session looks at the common issues that face a person who is newly diagnosed with diabetes, including:
- Should you recommend self-monitoring of blood glucose?
- What dietary advice should you give in order to manage blood glucose levels?
- Should you advise a person to increase exercise if they are slim?
- Which websites are credible and can help?

Keeping up with the … New Medications for Type II Diabetes
More and more medicines now exist and are being used in the management of type II diabetes mellitus. A greater capacity of these new medicines to lower blood glucose levels requires all nurses to be up-to-date on the safety considerations to prevent adverse patient outcomes. As such, the purpose of this session is to update your knowledge of the following:
- New medicines that exist for the treatment of Type II diabetes
- Expected clinical outcomes of these new medicines
- Interactions with other oral hypoglycaemic agents
- Reduction of risk in emerging safety issues associated with these new medicines
Speaking Out for Those Who Cannot – Advocacy and Nursing
Advocating is about speaking up when a problem goes unnoticed. All nurses are responsible for the trust patients put in them and their ability to advocate becomes incredibly important. This session looks at:
- What are your professional responsibilities in regard to advocacy?
- When should you speak up for a patient?
- Why advocating is really about negotiation?
- Can you be culpable for failing to advocate?

Medication Administration – How Accountable Am I?
There are a raft of reasons that can contribute to medication incidents. At times we may feel like these factors are out of our control. For instance, how often do you experience unclear orders, miscommunications, and constant interruptions? However, these reasons, no matter how common, must be seen as within our control. They will not protect us or our registrations in a situation where one's professional practice is called into question. This safe and interactive session will provide an opportunity to discuss specific case scenarios where the accountability of an Enrolled Nurse has been called into question as a result of a medication incident. You will be encouraged to reflect on the following:
- Am I complacent when it comes to medication safety?
- What occurs in my daily practice that could question my accountability?
- How can I incorporate greater accountability into my practice during these situations:
- Poor documentation concerning allergies and unclear orders
- Interruptions, fatigue and being constricted to time when administering medications
- Poor communication around medicines

Are You Stuck in a Rut?
These days burnout and stress are commonly associated with the nursing profession. We all know the nature of the work can be exceptionally demanding. Terms such as “compassion fatigue” illustrate the emotions involved. The complex combination of stressors result in impaired wellbeing: costly sick leave, decreased quality care, and increased risk. This opening session of day two takes a look at what might be causing these insidious professional dangers to occur. It will also provide an opportunity for you to reflect on ways you can prevent this from occurring to you.
Patient Satisfaction – the Elephant in the Room?
Listening to what patients are not saying – hearing the unheard – is as important as being attentive to what they are saying. Patient satisfaction, now seen as a key outcome of care, is often a difficult outcome to achieve. It is a highly subjective experience and is provided uniquely by different people. This can lead to immense confusion on both sides. This session looks at:
- What does patient satisfaction look like?
- Does it change when a person is seriously ill?
- What is the evidence in favour of achieving patient satisfaction?
- What tips are there for ENs in regard to finding their unique way to achieve patient satisfaction?

Venous Leg Ulcers – Sorting Fact from Fiction
Every Enrolled Nurse, regardless of their practice setting, is likely to have cared for a person with a venous leg ulcer. While clear evidence explains how venous leg ulcers should be assessed and managed, this knowledge does not always get translated into practice. As such, this session will clarify and assist you to understand the following:
- What is the difference between venous, arterial, and mixed leg ulcers?
- What causes them?
- How do you manage them?
Wound Healing – What Works Wonders?
Zinc, honey, sea salt spray – what’s next? The number of therapies and products available that are designed to promote wound healing grows by the day. But what actually works and how can we practically translate this growing body of evidence into practice? This session explains the following:
- What are the key ingredients for wound healing?
- How do we assess if a particular therapy is effective?
- A look at what options currently exist, work well, and can be applied to your practice

10 Tips for Nurse Mentoring
As Enrolled Nurses, you have experience that others who may be new to your ward or unit don’t have. Mentoring is your chance, as an experienced health professional, to assist your peers. It is well recognised that mentoring is a critical aspect of career development, yet how do we actually ingrain it into our daily practice? This session will explain mentoring and looks at 10 tips for successful mentoring, including:
- Does mentoring always have to be formal?
- How to navigate ward/unit politics and provide successful transference of wisdom
- 10 tips - tailored to EN’s - to provide mentoring
- How to identify when you may need mentoring yourself

Now What? Clinical Leadership at the Bedside
How will you as an Enrolled Nurse apply the new knowledge that you have gained or the existing knowledge that you have had reinforced over these past two days? Unfortunately, it is not as straightforward as we might think. Despite high personal motivation, there may be individual and/or environmental barriers that prevent this knowledge from being put into practice. This final session will arm you with practical tips that you can take away to enable you to translate knowledge into practice, including:
- What is clinical leadership?
- What barriers can prevent learning being put into practice?
- What if cultural change is required?
- What are some practical strategies to help you demonstrate your clinical leadership and apply new knowledge?

The Goal Need for Program
Enrolled Nurses (ENs) are under pressure to extend their scope of practice and broaden their nursing knowledge. This includes being proficient and skilled in selected areas of care. In addition, the gap between evidence and practice continues to widen – weakening the effectiveness of patient outcomes. As responsibility and accountability is fundamental to the work of ENs, it is imperative that continual updates to knowledge and skills are integrated into all aspects of patient care.
Purpose of Program
The purpose of this program is to improve patient outcomes by increasing the clinical and professional knowledge and practice of Enrolled Nurses.
