This talk will provide a brief overview of the pathophysiology associated with depressive disorders and explore how these may impact on an individual. There will be discussion of some tips and strategies that might be useful to help engage with this person to establish a therapeutic relationship and therefore good clinical outcomes.Presenter
Professor Joanne Connaughton is Dean of the School of Physiotherapy at the University of Notre Dame Australia. Before moving to academia Jo worked as Senior Physiotherapist in a mental health hospital in Fremantle providing physiotherapy for adults with acute mental health issues. Her doctorate explored headaches experienced by people with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
Jo is Chair of the APA Mental Health group and the Australian representative on the International Organisation of Physiotherapist in Psychiatry and Mental Health. Recently Jo and a fellow Physiotherapist trained to become Mental Health First Aid Instructors. She is passionate about promoting good physical health for people with mental health issues and believes that physiotherapists are best placed health professions to enable this.
