Fertility, infertility and preconception

This course provides an overview of fertility awareness and preconception care, the causes of infertility and indications for specialist referral.
General practitioners, along with other primary healthcare professionals, are ideally placed to provide information and education that may optimise the fertility potential of individuals and the health of the pregnancy and the baby[1].
This four-hour course has been developed to improve health professionals’ knowledge and understanding of fertility, preconception care (PCC) and infertility. It provides an overview of fertility awareness and PCC, the causes of infertility, and indications for specialist referral.
By the end of the course, health professionals working in primary care will be able to deliver evidence-based, best-practice PCC with improved knowledge and confidence.
RACGP
This activity has been approved by the RACGP QI&CPD Program in the 2020 - 2022 triennium. 40 CPD accredited course points – approved for Women's Health. The activity number is 191669.

This activity has accreditation for 6 hours as a distance-based education module, under the category for Obstetrics and Women’s Health. The activity code is: 20629
The course has been developed in collaboration with Dr Karin Hammarberg, Senior Research Officer at the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA), and Jean Hailes specialist women's health GP Dr Amanda Newman.

- outline the importance of a preconception care (PCC) plan
- summarise best-practice approaches for increasing fertility awareness within general practice
- distinguish between factors that influence fertility and pregnancy health
- recognise infertility indications requiring specialist referral.
