Who would benefit from this course

Medical practitioners including GPs and GP registrars who wish to expand their knowledge and clinical skills in contraception, cervical screening, sexually transmissible infections, menopause, men’s sexual health, common gynaecological conditions, vulval dermatology, unintended pregnancy options and a range of other topics related to reproductive and sexual health.

Course description

FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors – Distance modeconsists of theory and practical modules.

Module 1 - Theory. This module is designed to provide participants with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge in reproductive and sexual health. The theory module includes pre-reading and attendance at the two-day Doctors Short Course in Reproductive and Sexual Health is required, followed by completion of seven topics online via Distance mode.

Module 2 – Assessment. A one day face-to-face assessment held six months after the course commencement.

Module 3 – Clinical training. This is competency-based and includes sessions at a sexual health or a men's health clinic and an observation clinic at a Family Planning NSW centre, followed by participatory clinical sessions at Family Planning NSW centres. Clinical placements provide participants with the opportunity to develop and apply theoretical principles relating to contraception, gain confidence and expertise in clinical skills, and to develop communication and counselling skills in reproductive and sexual health care.

Implanon NXT training is offered by MSD on the Thursday evening to coincide with the FPAA course for those participants who have not yet completed the MSD training.

Implanon insertion and removal forms part of the assessment of competence for all participants wishing to attain the FPAA National certificate.

Intra uterine device (IUD) insertion is a separate course and is not included in this course.

Entry requirements / eligibility
  • Medical practitioners with current registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • At least two years postgraduate experience is desirable.
  • Participants should have an interest in reproductive and sexual health and a basic experience in gynaecological examination.
  • Adequate professional indemnity insurance is required and is the sole responsibility of the participant.
Learning outcomes
  • Understand the range of contraceptive options available
  • Recognize the need for processes to manage the pathway of cervical screening, including abnormal cervical screening result communication, appropriate follow up and recall
  • Discuss and provide information about STIs including their epidemiology, prevention, testing procedures, diagnosis and treatment
  • Understand and discuss menopause and its impact, and develop awareness of the treatment options available
  • Improve evidence-based knowledge in reproductive and sexual health
  • Increase ability to implement acquired knowledge in reproductive and sexual health in to clinical practice
  • Course structure

    Pre-course activities

    Pre-reading and related activities are made available on-line one week prior to attendance at the workshop. It is estimated these activities will take approximately no more than 1.5 hours.  This package consists of online activities, case studies, and videos. It is to be completed prior to a participant attending a face to face workshop. It is an expectation that all participants complete the online content before they attend their face to face workshop. Completion of the online content will enhance pre-workshop knowledge and skills and will ensure a satisfactory face to face and practicum experience

    A face-to-face assessment requiring one day attendance including a short answer case study written examination and role play examination

    Clinical Training

    Minimum of attendance at 6 clinical sessions at a Family Planning clinic and one observation session at a clinic focussed on men’s sexual health

    Clinical training must be completed twelve months from successfully completing the assessment

    Theory course and clinical training are eligible for the RACGP procedural grant for obstetrics

    Assessment

    Module 1 and 2 assessment will be based upon full attendance, a short answer case study-based written exam and clinical role plays to assess sexual history taking and communication skills prior to being accepted in to clinical training.

    Module 3 will be assessed based on successful completion of clinical training.

    Recognition/Accreditation

    The full FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors will be issued upon successful completion of Module 3 (clinical training)
