This intensive and comprehensive course for doctors provides training for excellence in the delivery of sexual and reproductive health in primary care.

  • Legal issues around sexual assault, family violence and young people

Participants will be required to attend a series of interactive live virtual classroom sessions at designated times during the day. Due to course requirements, these sessions must be attended at the scheduled times and cannot be watched at a later date. In addition, participants will be required to complete a series of eLearning modules that they may undertake in their own time.

The course comprises

Theory: The eLearning theory course component consists of online learning both before and after the course dates. During the scheduled course dates, you will join our presenters in our virtual classroom for interactive sessions from your own device.

The online learning sessions can be accessed up to 4 weeks prior to the face-to-face or virtual classroom course dates.

Written exam: Open-book format (short answer and multiple-choice questions)

Role-play exam: Video-link exam comprising a doctor/patient scenario

Clinical placements: Minimum of 7 practical sessions at our Box Hill or city clinic (3.5 hours each)

It is possible to undertake the clinical placements in another state. In this case, please pay the theory and exam fee to FPV, and contact the family planning organisation in your selected state to arrange your clinical placements. Please note: fees and arrangements of other family planning organisations may vary from those of FPV and availability of clinical placements may vary. 

Course completion extensions will be provided with increased flexibility in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Who would benefit from this course?

Medical practitioners

Entry requirements / Eligibility

Each participant must hold an MBBS or equivalent.

Participants should have completed a minimum of 1 year post internship and have some general practice or gynaecology outpatients experience.

Our Women’s Reproductive and Sexual Health course is available for medical practitioners who have more limited experience of women’s reproductive and sexual health in the Australian context.

To undertake the practical component, participants must have current medical registration with AHPRA and current medical indemnity insurance.

If you have any restrictions on your registration, please discuss these prior to registering for clinical placements to check eligibility.

All course participants completing any of their clinical placement component at Family Planning Victoria sites must obtain a national police check (included in the cost of course). This must be processed and accepted before placement can commence, which can take over a week.

All course participants registering for clinical placements must have done Implanon NXT Education & Simulation Practice course or equivalent (must have included simulation practice) prior to starting placements. 

Outcomes

The FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors is awarded to participants who successfully complete the theory, exam and clinical placements.

Participants who choose to only complete the theory course receive an FPV Statement of Attendance and are eligible for 40 RACGP Accredited Women’s Health points.

To be awarded the FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health the participant is required to pass all course requirements, including examinations and clinical competencies.

Theory: 40 RACGP CPD Accredited Activity Women’s Health points apply (accredited 2020-22 triennium)

Clinical: 40 RACGP CPD Accredited Activity Women’s Health points apply (accredited 2020-22 triennium)

Grant eligibility:

Theory course RACGP Rural Procedural Grant approved for 5 day Obstetrics grant.

Clinical course RACGP Rural Procedural Grant approved for 4 day Obstetrics grant
