Frailty is common in patients with COPD and is associated with poorer health outcomes, hospital admissions and failure to complete pulmonary rehabilitation. Early recognition of frailty in the natural course of COPD could allow early interventions such as pulmonary rehabilitation to minimise the development and impact of frailty on patients and carers. Pharmacists assessing frailty in the context of medication reviews may identify vulnerable patients and allow earlier interventions, including physical and respiratory rehabilitation.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  • identify pre-frailty and frailty in patients living in the community and residential aged care;
  • list potentially modifiable factors for slowing the progression of frailty;
  • describe the benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation and smoking cessation.
