This session describes how functional orthodontic appliances work and when their use is indicated. There is a particular emphasis on the Twin Block design.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the indications of when functional orthodontic appliances should be used
  • Describe the mechanism of action of functional orthodontic appliances
  • Describe the types of functional appliances in current use
  • Describe the main features of the Twin Block appliance

The purpose of functional appliances is to alter the antero-posterior relationship of the upper and lower dental arches.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have completed the following e-Den sessions in Module 7 Management of the Developing Dentition/Normal Facial Growth and Dental Development:
