Preparing for the future of healthcare
Genomics is a rapidly expanding area of medicine, with the potential to transform the way we diagnose, manage and treat many life-threatening and inherited conditions in the future.
Developed by Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare, this high-calibre programme covers critical knowledge in this area and a range of topics, including:
- the fundamentals of genomics and its application in healthcare
- the practicalities of integrating related technology into mainstream care (such as the processing of biological samples for whole genome sequencing).
Some courses are suitable for healthcare professionals with little or no prior knowledge while others are aimed at specialists in genomics.
There are courses both for qualified professionals and trainees, across a variety of different healthcare professions. The content is relevant to doctors, nurses, midwives, clinical and biomedical scientists, histopathologists and public health practitioners. It has been developed and reviewed by subject-matter experts and leaders in the field within the UK – recognised as a world leader in the genomics field.
Interactive and informative
You can select learning sessions that are relevant to your areas of interest and access the content online – anywhere, at any time. Alongside the learning content, the courses include film, animation, learner exercises and quizzes to help embed learning and deepen understanding on the key themes.
You can study at home, in work or on the move – and fit the learning around your busy working life.
Testimonials
The genomic revolution is critical to the personalisation of healthcare, to the prediction of disease, and the prevention of disease. That’s why we must train not just our current workforce but our future workforce in the skills they need to be able to respond.
Professor Ian Cumming OBE, Chief Executive, Health Education England
Genomics 101: Genomics in Healthcare
An introduction to genomics and how it is already used across healthcare sectors in a variety of clinical scenarios. This course is aimed at healthcare professionals with limited or no exposure to genomics or genetics in their clinical role (30 minutes).
Genomics 101: From Genes to Genome
Although the terms may be familiar, what exactly are genes and what is the genome? What function do they serve in maintaining our health? This course is aimed at healthcare professionals with limited or no exposure to genomics or genetics in their clinical role (30 minutes).
Genomics 101: Taking and Drawing a Genetic Family History
Discover why taking a patient's family history can help in the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Also included are some tools and tips needed to draw a family history. This course is aimed at healthcare professionals with limited or no exposure to genomics or genetics in their clinical role (30 minutes).
Genomics 101: Inheriting Genomic Information
Find out how DNA is passed from parent to offspring and from cell to cell and how errors in these processes can affect a person's health. This course is aimed at healthcare professionals with limited or no exposure to genomics or genetics in their clinical role (30 minutes).
Public Health Masterclass: Genomics in Healthcare
Learn from the experts in this video-based course which explores how genomics is driving change in key areas of public health. This course is aimed at professionals working within, or with an interest in, the public health arena (3 hours).
Introduction to Bioinformatics
Discover the principles and practices of clinical bioinformatics, key challenges in the field, and the problems it can help to solve. This course is aimed at healthcare scientists, as well as clinicians with an interest in clinical and data science (90 minutes).
Sample Processing and DNA Extraction
This video-based course covers best practice for processing blood and tumour samples for the 100,000 Genomes Project. This course is a useful reference for healthcare scientists involved in the delivery of genomic testing (60 minutes).
