GP Clinical Enhancement Module: Youth Mental Health

  • : Chatswood NSW 2067

This activity is for GPs only. If you are an allied health professional, please proceed to the "Allied Health Professional Skills Module: Youth Mental Health" activity. This Clinical Enhancement Module alone does not constitute a full MHST training program. To gain a MHST (Modular Pathway) qualification, you must complete an MHST Core Module in addition to this CEM in the same triennium. We are currently developing an accompanying MHST Core Module.

Welcome to the headspace Clinical Enhancement Module:Youth Mental Health.

This clinical enhancement module consists of five sequential parts. Each part will take approximately one hour to complete:

Learning Objectives

  • Identify ways to improve the engagement of young people, including the discussion of confidentiality, to improve treatment adherence and long term treatment success.
  • Assess, monitor and manage anxiety-related disorders, Depression, Borderline Personality Disorder and Psychosis.
  • Implement appropriate Mental Health Screening tools to help formulate evidence-based care plans for young people and recognise the impact a mental health disorder diagnosis may have on a young person.
  • Discuss how to ensure young people's safety by developing appropriate referral pathways and being aware of the indications for referral for specialist services.
  • Discuss appropriate treatment options, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Identify and understand the need for family to be involved in the treatment process, including when and how to incorporate these support networks with the permission of the young person.
  • Recognise the need to alter treatment to cater for young people from diverse backgrounds, including the need for culturally appropriate care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and effective engagement techniques for young people who identify as LGBTIQ.
