Learning objectives

  • diagnose and manage common musculoskeletal conditions that may affect the hand and wrist

Patients who present to primary care with conditions that affect the hand and wrist may have significant pain and loss of function.

Richard Smith,
Consultant in Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine

Richard first became interested in Musculoskeletal Medicine as a medical student when he published his first research paper looking into the effects of endurance and resistance exercise on the male skeleton.

Having trained in South London, he became a Rheumatology consultant in 2005 and then spent one year in Australia at the New South Wales Institute of Sports Medicine.

He currently runs seven clinics per week, including two multidisciplinary sports and musculoskeletal medicine clinics.

He is a member of the British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine and teaches and examines on the Diploma of Musculoskeletal Medicine. His interests are musculoskeletal ultrasound, inflammatory arthritis and soft tissue injuries.

His main hobby is being physician to the world’s strongest men!
