Learning objectives

Welcome to this session on the treatment and follow-up of heart valve disease (HVD).

This session aims to explain:

  • indications for intervention in patients with HVD (aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation)
  • which therapeutic options are available
  • the risks and benefits of different treatments, which patients need to know, and the outcomes after treatment
  • the long-term prognosis, and the lifestyle changes required
  • how to recognise treatment failure

 

At the end of this session you will know how to:

  • recognise the indications for intervention in patients with heart valve disease
  • discuss the therapeutic options available for patients with heart valve disease
  • identify the risks and benefits of the treatments which patients need to know
  • recognise what factors determine the care patients receive – shared care, role of MDT working, NICE and the NHS, risks of anticoagulant therapy
  • describe the outcomes after treatment, the aspects of recovery, follow-up and the medications required post-treatment
  • discuss the long-term prognosis, lifestyle changes and how to recognise treatment failure
