Early investigation is critical to determining the cause of heart failure, its mechanism and any exacerbating factors, allowing for management to be optimised for each patient. This module explores the diagnostic investigations essential for heart failure including echocardiography, ECG, chest X-ray and blood tests, as well as guidance on interpreting results.

By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Undertake appropriate diagnostic investigations for patients with suspected heart failure.
  • Understand the roles of various diagnostic methods in HF investigation.
  • Differentiate between heart failure with preserved and reduced ejection fraction using echocardiography.
  • Identify underlying comorbidities which may interact with HF.
