Attendees will be provided with an introduction to home modification practice, with information on the role of the OT, home modification process, the application of specific models of practice, clinical reasoning, the importance of measurement and drawing, the essential elements to include in reports and drawings, the relevance and intent of the use of Legislation, Building Codes, and Australian Standards for domestic home modifications, and current research on grabrail prescription. Resources for practice will be discussed throughout the presentation.

Suitable for OT's only - Students, New Graduates and OT's who need a refresher course

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The workshop aims to provide occupational therapy practitioners with:

  • An understanding of current models of practice and the application of clinical reasoning to home modification practice
  • Information on the relevance and application of access standards to home modification practice
  • Practice measuring the person, their equipment and carer
  • Practice measuring the built environment
  • Information on how to translate the various measurements into features in the built environment
  • Practice drawing to scale by hand
  • Information on essential detail to include in OT reports
  • Resource information to enhance practice
  • Information on minor modifications to address environmental barriers

Outcomes - Enhance measurement and drawing skills and enhance current knowledge about home modification practice in the specific areas listed.

Teaching Strategies – use of lecture format with theory illustrated by diagrams, and photos; practical group discussion and group activity.

Learning Activities – practical measuring of the built environment and drawing of toilet area as part of learning to draw to scale

PRESENTER

Elizabeth Ainsworth

Elizabeth Ainsworth (B Occ Thy, Hons; M Occ Thy, Contemporary Clinical Practice) is a private practice Occupational Therapist and Access Consultant (qualified and accredited) who has been working in the housing field in Australia for over 20 years. She has a keen interest in Universal Design and has presented papers both nationally and internationally on the impact of this design approach on housing design and home modification practice. Elizabeth is a consultant to individuals and their families, and clients in the insurance, legal and construction industries; an expert witness for the Supreme Court in Queensland; and a Livable Housing Assessor. 

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Participants will need:

  • Copy of AS 1428.1 2009 if this can be accessed through their workplace or purchased
  • Steel tape measures
  • Scale ruler with 1:20 scale (and not ordinary ruler)
  • Pencils, erasers and spare paper
