Description
This session describes the advanced management of hypoxaemia and hypercapnia in mechanically ventilated patients.
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the important causes of hypoxaemia and hypercapnia during positive pressure ventilation
- Describe the management of hypoxaemia during mechanical ventilation
- Describe the management of refractory hypoxaemia in severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
- Describe the management of hypercapnia during mechanical ventilation

Mechanical ventilation is the most commonly applied organ support used in the ICU.
This session reviews the management of a deterioration in arterial blood gases during mechanical ventilation, hypoxaemia and hypercapnia. It also looks at ventilator strategies available for managing refractory hypoxaemia in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).
