ICU learning pathway | Post-operative Respiratory Failure
Postoperative Respiratory Failure
Session Overview
Description
The pathogenesis of risk factors for and management of postoperative respiratory failure are discussed. Preoperative assessment is highlighted as well as the management of respiratory function in particular types of high-risk surgery.
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the major effects of anaesthesia and surgery on respiratory function
- List the risk factors for postoperative respiratory failure
- Describe how preoperative assessment can define risk and help to prevent perioperative respiratory complications
- Describe appropriate management for patients with postoperative respiratory failure in a variety of contexts
Before commencing this session you should complete:
- Module 01/Principles of Anaesthesia/Post-anaesthesia recovery/Analgesia and antiemetics (001-0057)
- Module 02/Postoperative and Recovery Care/Postoperative care/Postoperative analgesia: basic principles and analgesic ladder (001-0231)
Postoperative respiratory failure frequently complicates the recovery from surgery.
The incidence and severity of postoperative respiratory complications are determined by:
- Characteristics of the patient
- The site, type and duration of surgery
- Perioperative management
Understanding the risk factors for and pathogenesis of postoperative respiratory failure can improve patient outcomes through primary and secondary prevention.
