ICU learning pathway | Renal Replacement Therapy
Renal Replacement Therapies
Session Overview
Description
This session will explore the mechanical support of renal function used in the critically ill patient with acute kidney injury.
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Interpret the nomenclature used to describe renal replacement therapy
- Describe the principles and differences between haemofiltration and haemodialysis
- List the indications for renal replacement therapy
- Prioritize the potential difficulties and complications of performing renal replacement therapy
- Explain the debate surrounding initiation, dose and duration of therapy
Before commencing this session you should have completed:
- Module 03/Critical Care/Sepsis and MOF/Organ Failure/Renal Failure
Renal replacement therapy is a common form of organ support in the critically ill patient. The idea is to support the function of the injured kidneys to allow time for repair, which will occur in most patients.
During this session a real case study of a patient will be used. You will prescribe renal replacement therapy and by doing so consider some of the issues involved when using this treatment.

- This session will introduce pharmacokinetics and modelling. The simple one-compartment model will be described and reasons presented as to why such a model rarely describes drug behaviour.
