Session Overview
Description
This session covers the warning signs to be aware of when looking after a patient with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy, what equipment to have immediately available at the bedside and the emergency management of upper airway complications.

Tracheostomies are increasingly common in hospitals. Multidisciplinary staff may be called upon to troubleshoot problems, provide advice or manage emergencies.

Unfortunately, these artificial airways can become blocked or displaced, potentially leading to serious morbidity and mortality.

This session covers the information required to safely manage an emergency situation in a ‘neck breathing’ patient. This includes:

  • Recognition of warning signs
  • Essential bedside equipment
  • Emergency algorithms
