Level 3 – Fabricated and Induced Illness

This micro skills course will consider approaches to managing a case in which fabricated and induced illness (FII) is suspected. While the micro skills course is based on the perspective of a paediatrician who takes a referral for specialist appraisal of a suspected FII case, it demonstrates that other health professionals including GPs, A&E doctors and nurses, the child and adolescent mental health team, health visitors, school nurses, therapists and dieticians, may be directly involved in this difficult area. Paediatric surgeons, anaesthetists and other specialists may also be involved.

What will I learn?

  • By the end of this session you will be able to:
  • Describe the implications for paediatricians and other health professionals of guidance on factitious/fabricated and induced illness (FII);
  • Manage or contribute to a complex FII case and contribute to the formulation of appropriate plans to ensure the safety of the child, including the planning of an admission for assessment of FII;
  • Recognise the stress on the medical and nursing team of working with FII and be able to seek local support and help
