This session aims to outline how type 1 diabetes impacts on the lives of children and young people and their associated lifestyle considerations.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the impact of diabetes on families
  • List the issues surrounding diabetes management at school
  • Explain the impact of exercise on blood sugar levels
  • Outline the advice that needs to be given to the child, family and other healthcare professionals on blood glucose management during exercise
  • Describe the impact of diabetes on other aspects of a young person's life such as driving, work, etc

This session outlines how type 1 diabetes impacts on the lives of children and young people (CYP) and their associated lifestyle considerations.

Jan Idkowiak,
Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Endocrinology

Jan is National GRID Trainee in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and NIHR Academic Lecturer at the University of Birmingham.

He has been awarded with a PhD on his thesis on the molecular regulation of androgen biosynthesis in 2015.

He is interested in androgen excess and deficiency conditions, obesity and early markers of metabolic disease progression.
