New fathers may also experience symptoms of perinatal depression and anxiety, particularly prior to the birth of a new baby. Studies have indicated that in the postnatal period, 5-10% of fathers will develop depression and associated anxiety. This module explores how to effectively support the mental wellbeing of fathers and partners during the perinatal period.

By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the common ways in which perinatal depression in women impacts on fathers and partners.
  • Identify the symptoms of perinatal depression and clinical anxiety specific to fathers and partners.
  • Discuss the key considerations in recognising symptoms of perinatal depression and anxiety in men.
  • Describe the importance of new fathers connecting with other new fathers and partners during the perinatal period to assist in improving their social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Summarise the impact of perinatal depression in fathers and understand why it is so important to intervene.
