In response to COVID-19, the University of Sydney has reviewed the availability of courses to be delivered remotely for students commencing their studies in Semester 1, 2021.

This course will be available to study remotely for students commencing in Semester 1, 2021. Please note that some units of study that are not essential to completing the degree may not be available to be studied remotely.

Note: The University intends to offer as many units of study as possible in a remote as well as face-to-face learning method of delivery in Semester 1, 2021 and subject to ongoing border closures and public health orders impacting attendance on campus, in Semester 2, 2021. However, some units of study and courses require students to study in-person at the relevant University of Sydney campus/es and host locations for placements and will not be available remotely. 

About this course

The Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) is a practical and clinically focused course that will refine your ability to diagnose, investigate and manage common and important diseases in adults. It will guide your care of patients and will be readily integrated into your daily clinical work.

This course is delivered jointly by the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne, bringing a unique breadth of teaching and clinical experience.

This course is offered through our interactive online learning environment, giving you the flexibility to tailor your study schedule around your lifestyle.

All stream specific units are online. One capstone unit however does have an intensive face-to-face component.

Study at a basic or advanced level in most of the medical specialties, and tailor the degree to your needs and interests. A broad range of elective units are also offered, including units in clinical teaching, statistical analysis, grant writing and other research skills.

  • Trainees and established clinicians working in emergency medicine, intensive care medicine or adult general practice.

What you'll study 

The Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) requires the completion of 48 credit points of units of study including:

  • 12 credit points of compulsory units of study
  • 24 credit points of stream specific units of study
  • 12 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

The INTM stream specific units are offered at a basic and advanced level and over the next 2 years, all the major subspecialties will be available. 

Basic units are aimed at the level of knowledge expected for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Basic Training examination, while advanced units provide an introduction to subspecialty practice.

It is recommended that you undertake no more than 6 - 12 credit points per semester. Please note most of the INTM stream specific units of study are 3 credit points. All other units are 6 credit points. All core learning material is delivered online and some units of study have an intensive face to face teaching session.
