Master of Occupational Therapy
The Master of Occupational Therapy at Flinders University is a professional-entry postgraduate program designed to prepare students for registration and practice as occupational therapists in Australia and internationally. Occupational therapy is a client-centered health profession that promotes participation, independence, and wellbeing through engagement in everyday activities. This program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required to work across diverse healthcare and community settings.
The curriculum integrates occupational therapy theory, biomedical sciences, inter-professional practice, and contemporary issues in healthcare. Students progressively develop expertise in evaluation, intervention, and research methods, while also engaging with topics on social perspectives in health, psychology, and sociology. A distinctive feature of the program is its strong connection to clinical settings across Adelaide, with close links to healthcare providers ensuring students gain real-world experience.
Practical training is central to the program, with students completing four supervised professional experience placements totaling 1,000 hours. These placements are scheduled outside of standard teaching weeks and may occur in metropolitan, rural, or remote locations. They provide opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in hospitals, rehabilitation services, aged care, mental health, paediatrics, and community health. Compliance requirements include police checks, immunizations, and Department of Communities and Social Inclusion screenings, ensuring readiness for clinical practice.
The program is accredited by the Occupational Therapy Council of Australia Ltd and approved by the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia, making graduates eligible for registration. It is also recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, opening international career pathways. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 5.0 and prerequisite studies in anatomy, physiology, psychology/sociology, and research methods. International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency with an IELTS score of 7.0 overall.
Career prospects are strong, with occupational therapists in demand across public health, private practice, aged care, disability services, rehabilitation, and education. Graduates are prepared to work in diverse environments, from hospitals and government departments to non-government organizations and community health services. With its emphasis on practical experience, professional accreditation, and strong industry connections, the Flinders Master of Occupational Therapy provides a comprehensive pathway to a rewarding career in allied health.
