CheckUP is pleased to provide a one day Mental Health Skills Training (MHST) program (Primary Pathway). GPs who complete this training will be able to claim MBS Item numbers 2715 and 2717 for the preparation of General Practice Mental Health Treatment Plans (GPMHTPs)

This course is accredited by the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) as a MHST program and with:-

  • Royal Australian College of General Practitioners - activity approved by the RACGP QI&CPD Program.  40 Category 1 points (MH-ST) - (Activity: 95297) 2017 to 2019 triennium.
  • Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (Activity 6891)- 30 PRPD points.

What is this training about?

 The workshop program is designed to be practical and interactive and to build on participant’s existing knowledge and skills. The first half of the workshop focuses on assessment, planning and review of treatment plans.  The second half focuses on topics that complement a GP’s knowledge of managing patients who experience mental health issues including evidence based psychological interventions, physical health and mental illness and working with other mental health support services.  The program has been developed with a strong consumer and carer focus to enable participants to further develop their understanding of the perspectives of people who have a lived experience of mental illness and the carers and family who support them.

At the conclusion of the workshop participants will have:-

  • Skills in mental health assessment, including interview skills, psychosocial history taking, risk assessment, current psychosocial status and comorbidity
  • Ability to use appropriate psychometric instruments to aid assessment and to identify change
  • Ability to negotiate a shared understanding of the mental illness with the consumer, culminating in an agreed GPMHTP
  • Skills in shared care, multidisciplinary communication and team work.
  • Knowledge of  practice systems and resources to identify local services and resources to safeguard consumer safety and assist in providing holistic mental health care to consumers
  • Understanding of the experience of mental illness from the  perspective of consumers and their carers and families
  • Working knowledge of the Medicare Benefits Schedule items relating to provision of mental health care by a GP

Who should do this training?

The training program supports general practitioners to further develop and improve their skills preparing evidence based General Practice Mental Health Treatment Plans (GPMHTPs), monitoring and reviewing progress and referring patients to appropriate services.

How is it delivered?

The program consists of a minimum of six hours of face to face structured learning delivered by an experienced health professional (usually a registered psychologist or experienced mental health clinician). The program has been developed with a strong consumer and carer focus and  involves both a consumer and carer in the delivery.

This one day training is provided as an on demand opportunity. This flexible approach to scheduling is based on a wait list of enquiries from individuals or organisations specific to this course. These workshops will only proceed if sufficient registrations are received.
