Multidisciplinary Management of Chronic Pain course



This session describes the management of chronic pain by using non-pharmacological treatment and integration of medical, psychological and activity management strategies across a multidisciplinary team.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain how the biopsychosocial model creates opportunities for therapeutic intervention in chronic pain
- Describe the aims of the treatment of chronic pain
- Describe the role and responsibilities of the members of the multidisciplinary team in pain management
- Critically appraise the evidence base for the multidisciplinary management of chronic pain
- Select appropriate methods for assessing outcome of treatment
Chronic pain is a complex sensory, emotional, cognitive and behavioural long-term health condition. Patients often have complex multidimensional problems, which require a multidisciplinary approach.


Sailesh completed his undergraduate medical training and postgraduate specialist training (MD) in Anesthetics in India and moved to the UK in 2003. He completed his specialist training programme for his Anesthetics and Pain Medicine fellowship in Manchester and subsequently started his consultant career in Newcastle in 2011.
He leads the acute pain service in his hospital and is a lecturer and lead trainer for undergraduates in Pain Management at Newcastle University.
