The aim of this webinar is to introduce the audience to the therapeutic benefits of supporting clients to share their personal stories of lived experience. Research evidence and a model of narrative storytelling will be used to illustrate the transformative potential of narrative storytelling in supporting positive identity growth. Key areas of exploration include:

1) Storytelling as meaningful occupational engagement;
2) Storytelling as a humanising relational experience; and
3) Enabling personal reflection and self-learning through storytelling.

Approaches to narrative storytelling will be explored, including practical strategies to embed storytelling into clinical practice. Accessibility of storytelling with people with cognitive and communication challenges will also be outlined.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the webinar it is expected that participants will:

  • Be informed of research evidence supporting the use of narrative approaches in clinical practice
  • Recognise the therapeutic benefits of narrative storytelling
  • Apply this understanding of therapeutic benefits to the relationship between narrative storytelling and positive identity growth
  • Understand practical strategies to embed storytelling into clinical practice
  • Appreciate the accessibility of narrative storytelling with clients with cognitive and communication challenges.
     

PRESENTER

Kate D’Cruz

Kate D’Cruz PhD is an experienced occupational therapist and researcher. She works as an academic at La Trobe University and as a senior research fellow at the Summer Foundation, in Melbourne Australia.  Kate has a particular interest in understanding the lived experience of disability and in her doctorate explored the experience and impact of narrative storytelling for adults living with acquired brain injury.
