Course Overview

Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms with various possible causes experienced by patients globally. It is vital that treatment options provided to patients are evidence-based and that the health professional has a strong understanding of the pharmacology involved.

Purpose

The purpose of this Course is to examine possible causes of nausea and vomiting, and provide learners with the knowledge to assist the treatment, referral and counselling of a patient.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify some of the causes of nausea and vomiting.
  • Discuss the use of medicines used to reduce the symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
  • Offer treatment choices for common causes of nausea and vomiting.
  • Discuss the side effects, adverse reactions and precautions of these medicines.

Target Audience

Pharmacists and health professionals regularly involved in prescribing, dispensing, or administering medicines for the treatment of nausea and vomiting.

Jenny Gowan

Jenny is a practicing pharmacist, a Teaching Associate at Monash University and Clinical Associate at RMIT university . She is a current member of the PSA Branch committee, Editorial Board Member of AUS-DI (Drug information), Guidelines Committee for the National Asthma Council Australian Asthma Handbook, and RACGP Silver book for Aged Care . Jenny is an accredited consultant pharmacist, and conducts her own company focussing on medication reviews in the home and Aged Care Facilities as well as Quality Use of Medicine consultancy. She works regularly in community pharmacy plus sessions in a GP clinic at a Community Health Centre. Jenny has published over 380 educational articles and presents hundreds of talks annually. In 2010 Jenny received the Sanofi-Aventis award by the University of Sydney, in 2013, PSA Australian Pharmacist of the Year and 2016 Jenny was the AACP-MIMs Consultant Pharmacist of the Year.

Louis Roller

Louis has been an academic at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Monash University for some 56 years. He was on the Pharmacy Board of Victoria for 22 years and has significantly contributed to many editions of various pharmaceutical compendia including the Therapeutic Guidelines. He has been and is on the Editorial Board of the Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary and Handbook and has contributed significantly to all three editions of Mosby’s Dictionary Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. He is the author of hundreds of scientific and professional articles and has a passion for evidence-based knowledge and with Jenny Gowan since 1995 writes articles on Disease State Management. He lectures to pharmacists, medical practitioners, nurses, podiatrists and optometrists on a variety of therapeutic topics, as well the University of the Third Age on various medication-related issues. He still lectures to pharmacy undergraduates on a number of topics. He has particular interests in drug interactions and pharmacogenomics and William Shakespeare. He has served as a committee member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, Victorian Branch since 2008. In 2012, he was made a life member of the Australasian Pharmaceutical Sciences Association and in 2014, he was awarded the life-long achievement award of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. His current activities (as well as the above) include singing in a choir, visiting schools re bullying (Courage to Care) giving talks to U3A groups and similar groups. He is a proud member of the Australian Skeptics.
