Nutritional considerations post bariatric surgery

  • : Online
Overview

Bariatric surgery is an increasingly popular intervention for obese and morbidly obese patients. Benefits of surgery include significant weight reduction, effective management of associated chronic disease and improved quality of life.

However, these surgical interventions are not without complications.

This module is designed to give nurses an overview of the nutritional considerations for patients and their healthcare providers following bariatric surgery. It provides a brief explanation of the different types of bariatric surgery available and their advantages and disadvantages.

Patients undergoing bariatric surgery will be referred to a dietitian, however, it is helpful for nurses to understand the implications of the surgery on long term nutritional needs of these patients.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Describe the types of bariatric surgery and highlight some advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Discuss the main complications associated with bariatric surgery.
  • Understand the micro-nutrient monitoring and management required in order to prevent micro-nutrient deficiencies following bariatric surgery.
  • Describe the macro-nutrient considerations following bariatric surgery including recommendations for protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fluid intake..
  • Highlight behavioural and dietary modifications recommended to prevent complications post-bariatric surgery.
  • Identify the potential causes and interventions for minimal weight loss or substantial weight regain following bariatric surgery.
