Nutritional considerations post bariatric surgery
- : Online
Bariatric surgery is an increasingly popular intervention for obese and morbidly obese patients. Benefits of surgery include significant weight reduction, effective management of associated chronic disease and improved quality of life.
However, these surgical interventions are not without complications.
This module is designed to give nurses an overview of the nutritional considerations for patients and their healthcare providers following bariatric surgery. It provides a brief explanation of the different types of bariatric surgery available and their advantages and disadvantages.
Patients undergoing bariatric surgery will be referred to a dietitian, however, it is helpful for nurses to understand the implications of the surgery on long term nutritional needs of these patients.
