Ophthal-Assist is a telehealth and educational initiative of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) in collaboration with lead ophthalmologists with an understanding of the rural and remote context and a commitment to the support for rural clinicians (doctors and optometrists) who care for people who live in these communities.
This pilot program is supported by the College under its Rural Health Outreach Fund program and depends on the good will of the participating ophthalmologists.
For a time limited period it will provide rural doctors with free access to a specialist to provide clinical advice to assist in the assessment and management of ophthalmology conditions. The evaluation of this pilot will assist in the development of a case for sustained delivery. This store and forward service is designed to complement not replace the real time tele-ophthalmology and retinal screening telehealth arrangements, or face to face consultations, funded under the MBS.
