Oral Contraceptives Course (OCP)
The Oral Contraceptives Course (OCP) offered by the Australian College of Pharmacy (ACP) is a nationally recognized training program designed to support pharmacists in extending their scope of practice. This course fulfills the education requirements set out by multiple state governments, including New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania, enabling pharmacists to participate in structured programs for the resupply of low-risk oral contraceptives. The course is particularly relevant in the context of initiatives such as the NSW Pharmacy Trial and the Victorian Community Pharmacist Program, which allow eligible women to access continued supply of oral contraceptives directly from trained pharmacists. The program covers legislative frameworks, clinical protocols, and professional responsibilities across different jurisdictions. For example, in Tasmania, pharmacists can resupply oral contraceptives for up to 12 months under the Poisons Regulations 2018, while in South Australia, the Community Pharmacy OCP Resupply Services Scheme provides similar authority. The course content includes modules on the female reproductive system, hormonal contraceptive options, reproductive history-taking, risk assessment, counselling, documentation, and referral pathways. Learning objectives emphasize safe prescribing practices, patient-centred care, and adherence to state-specific protocols. On completion, pharmacists will be able to outline their scope of practice in managing hormonal contraceptives, identify risks, and apply approved clinical pathways for resupply. The course is accredited for 1.5 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 3 CPD credits as Group 2 upon assessment), aligning with the National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia. It is accessible online, allowing pharmacists to complete training flexibly while meeting professional development requirements. By equipping pharmacists with the knowledge and skills to safely resupply oral contraceptives, the course enhances access to primary care services, reduces barriers for women seeking contraception, and strengthens the role of community pharmacy in public health. This makes the OCP course an essential component of professional development for pharmacists aiming to expand their practice and contribute to improved healthcare outcomes across Australia.
