This session looks at the assessment of pain, including the commonly used pain assessment tools and the situations in which they may be used. The management of background and breakthrough pain, including the use of opioids, is then considered.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between pain at rest and pain on movement
  • List the commonly used pain assessment tools and the situations when they may be used
  • Describe the basic principles of prescribing for pain

Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management, Oxford University Hospitals Trust

Since qualifying from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1990, Jane trained in anaesthesia in London at St Thomas’ and Bart’s hospitals, and in Oxford.

She is now a consultant anaesthetist in Oxford, and an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Oxford.

Jane’s professional interests include acute and inpatient pain management.

Jane is a content author and module editor for the e-PAIN project.
