This session provides an understanding of the pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes. It covers the incidence and prevalence, aetiological factors, considers the role of insulin and the outcomes of insulin deficiency.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • State the incidence and prevalence of type 1 diabetes
  • List the possible aetiological factors in type 1 diabetes
  • Explain the role of insulin in glucose metabolism
  • Describe the consequences of insulin deficiency

This is the first of seven sessions that will provide you with the relevant knowledge for when a well child first presents with type 1 diabetes.
