Overview

Prevention of diabetic foot disease is the goal of undertaking foot assessment and screening.

Identifying the risk level can direct the types of interventions and education messages that will assist in reducing the risk of developing complications.

The six elements of prevention are:

  • Identifying the at-risk foot
  • Regularly inspecting and inspecting the at-risk foot
  • Educating the patient, family, carers and healthcare providers
  • Ensuring routine wearing of appropriate footwear
  • Treating risk factors of ulceration
