This session describes the range of clinical factors that are assessed during examination of the periodontal tissues.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the features that should be assessed during a periodontal examination
  • Explain the rationale for periodontal assessment
  • Describe why problems with periodontal probing can occur

Periodontal assessment is an essential component of the dental examination of patients.

There are many features that should be examined when performing a periodontal assessment, only some of which are assessed during a Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE).

Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry

Anthony is Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry, University of Manchester.

Anthony qualified in 1996 with BDS Honours having also completed an Intercalated Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Physiology in 1993. Following completion of his primary dental degree, he worked in General Dental Practice as a VDP and then in a variety of SHO positions. He was then appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry in 1998 and completed his Fellowship in Dental Surgery in 1999.

Anthony’s main interest within Restorative Dentistry is Periodontology and he embarked on a clinical academic training programme which resulted in completion of his PhD thesis on ‘Microbial Responses to Human Stress Hormones in Periodontal Disease’ in 2006 and his Specialist Training Programme in Restorative Dentistry in 2007. Anthony’s research was awarded the prestigious Sir Wilfred Fish Prize from the British Society of Periodontology in 2006 and, in recognition of his teaching activities, he was awarded the status of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2007 and voted Manchester DDU Dentist Teacher of the Year in 2009.
