Pharmacological approaches to the management of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women

  • : South Wharf VIC 3006

Pharmacological therapy is a widely used management method for osteoporosis, but it requires the choice of medication to be individualised to each patient and strict patient adherence to their treatment program. This education explores pharmacological treatment strategies for post-menopausal women with a diagnosis of osteoporosis.

On completion of this education activity participants will be able to:

  • Describe the prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, and the public health burden associated with under-diagnosis and lack of treatment.
  • Proactively investigate and diagnose osteoporosis in postmenopausal women using appropriate screening techniques including risk factor evaluation.
  • Individualise pharmacological treatment strategies, taking into account route of administration and frequency of dosing, in order to reduce morbidity and increase quality of life.
  • Counsel patients on safety and possible adverse effects associated with osteoporosis treatments.

This program has been developed with an educational grant from Amgen.
