This activity facilitates practice improvement for pharmacists providing counselling to RA patients

Optimising use of low-dose methotrexate and bDMARDs in RA

Learn about helping patients with RA and taking low-dose methotrexate and/or bDMARDS to optimise their use of these medicines.

This activity includes:

  • Using a practice audit tool to identify areas of practice that need improvement for patients with RA taking low-dose methotrexate and/or bDMARDs.
  • Developing a practice plan based on the outcome of the practice audit tool
  • Reflecting on your practice improvement.

What is your role?

Pharmacists can use this activity to identify areas of practice improvement when assisting patients with RA prescribed low-dose methotrexate and/or bDMARDs. Using the summary from the practice audit tool, they then go on to develop a practice improvement plan assisting them in providing optimal patient care.

What’s in it for you?

Perform a practice audit of patients with RA taking low-dose methotrexate and/or bDMARDs and develop a practice improvement action plan.

***This activity is available for all pharmacists (PSA members and non-members). Non-members will need to create a non-member account to register.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  • Explain the use of methotrexate in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the use of folate supplementation in managing methotrexate-related adverse effects
  • Recognise and address common misconceptions associated with low-dose methotrexate taken once weekly
  • Identify and be able to discuss with patients lifestyle modifications that help optimise RA management
  • Discuss with patients the role of biological disease-modifying, anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) in the management of RA
  • Explain biosimilar substitution and the impact of inadvertent multiple switching to patients
  • Support patients with RA undergoing a bDMARD down-titration process.
  • Discuss with patients appropriate treatment options in the management of a disease flare in RA
  • Discuss the limited role of glucocorticoid and opioids in the management of inflammatory arthritis.
  • Complete a practice audit of patients using methotrexate (MTX) and biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to address knowledge gaps previously identified for pharmacists
  • Develop a Practice Improvement Action Plan based on the Practice Audit Tool summary to facilitate optimal medication management by patients using methotrexate (MTX) and biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
