Pre-pregnancy planning and care for women with diabetes

This course provides information for health professionals on planning and preparing for pregnancy for women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The course includes 3 modules – pregnancy and diabetes, preconception counselling (including effective contraception use) and the pre-pregnancy care. It includes two non-assessed case studies to assist learners with applying the content to their practice.

Objectives:

By the end of the modules, participants will be able to:
1.    Describe the maternal and neonatal risks associated with pre-existing diabetes and pregnancy
2.    Describe pregnancy outcomes for Australian women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes
3.    Understand the benefits of preconception counselling
4.    Identify reliable forms of contraception suitable for women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes
5.    Implement preconception counselling in practice
6.    Understand the benefits of diabetes specific pre-pregnancy care
7.    Explain the key elements of diabetes specific pre-pregnancy care
8.    Implement a pregnancy planning checklist for women with diabetes
9.    Identify key members of the diabetes in pregnancy health care team and appropriate referral pathways
10.  Locate available NDSS pregnancy and diabetes resources to support patient care
