Principles of Calcified Canals course for Dental Practice



This session looks at the aetiology of pulpal calcification and its clinical implications.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the aetiology of pulpal calcifications
- Identify the presence of pulpal calcifications
This session will discuss the aetiology of pulpal calcifications, the different types of calcifications and their diagnosis, both clinically and radiographically.
Before commencing this session you should have:
- An understanding of the dentine pulp complex and its controlling mechanisms
- An understanding of the consequences of trauma on the dental pulp
- A good understanding of the principals of root canal treatment
Paul graduated from University College Cork, Ireland, in 1987, and then spent four years in general practice in the UK. He completed an M.Sc in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manchester in 1992. He set up his own dental practice with his wife, Lorna, in Oranmore, Co. Galway in 1993 with an interest in Restorative Dentistry. He completed the M.G.D.S., R.C.S.I. in 1997 and limited his practice in Oranmore to Endodontics in 2000. Having completed the M.Sc. D. in Endodontics from Cardiff in 2004, he was appointed an honorary lecturer to Cardiff University that same year and is still in that position. This involves lecturing to both undergraduate and postgraduate students on endodontic related topics.
Paul is a referee for the International Endodontic Journal since 2004 and is still active in that regard. He is on the GDC Specialist register in Endodontics, and is a certified member of the European Society of Endodontology. He has several publications in peer reviewed journals and has lectured widely in Ireland and the UK on endodontic related topics. He relocated his endodontic practice to a custom built unit in 2008, also in Oranmore, Co. Galway. In 2009, he was appointed the position of Assistant Editor of the International Endodontic Journal and is responsible for the Clinical section. He was also appointed as a tutor for the distance learning programme in postgraduate dental studies at Cardiff University.
