The session outlines the current UK guidelines for the practice of conscious sedation in dentistry. The application of the guidelines to clinical practice and the training required for the dental team to undertake conscious sedation in primary care will be considered.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the need for sedation guidelines
  • identify the most recent UK guidelines for the use of conscious sedation in dentistry and the main subject areas presented
  • explain the relevance of national guidelines to the practice of conscious sedation
  • describe the training requirements for conscious sedation
  • identify important guidelines for conscious sedation in children

Any technique resulting in loss of consciousness is defined as general anaesthesia in the UK and is not acceptable under the guise of conscious sedation due to the risks to patient safety.

Mr Matt Dorman BDS (Hons) FDSRCS FFDRCSI Dip SED.

Matt qualified from Newcastle with Honours in 1997. After completing vocational training, he worked for two years as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Newcastle and Middlesbrough General Hospitals. Matt worked for nine years at Sunderland Royal Hospital, as a Staff Grade then as an Associate Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Matt gained his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College Of Surgeons (ENG) in 2000. He completed his Diploma in Conscious Sedation in 2002. He then went on to pass his Specialist Fellowship Examination in Oral Surgery in 2003 and registered as a Specialist Oral Surgeon with the GDC in 2005. Matt is an honorary clinical tutor on the Diploma in Conscious Sedation Course at Newcastle University. He has been involved in the teaching of oral surgery to postgraduates in his hospital post and has several publications in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of Oral Surgery and Sedation.

Matt has been involved in providing Specialist Oral Surgery Services at Queensway since 2001 and joined the practice full time in October 2009 as a Specialist Oral Surgeon.
