This session will outline the UK national guidelines relating to the provision of general anaesthesia for dental treatment.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list and discuss the main recommendations for dental general anaesthesia as stated in the UK national guidelines 'A Conscious Decision - A review of the use of general anaesthesia and conscious sedation in primary dental care'
  • describe the General Dental Council’s stance on the UK national guidelines
  • list and discuss the key principles for general anaesthesia in paediatric dentistry as stated in the UK National Clinical Guidelines in Paediatric Dentistry: Guidelines for the Use of General Anaesthesia (GA) in Paediatric Dentistry

The management of pain and anxiety for dental patients is essential in order to ensure the delivery of safe and effective care.

Dr Kathy Wilson is an Associate Specialist in Dental Sedation at Newcastle Dental Hospital.

Currently lecturing in the field of dental sedation and special care dentistry at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Kathy has extensive clinical experience in management of the anxious dental patient.

Kathy is also part of the Module Editorial Team at e-Den, and is Module Editor for Module 3 Anxiety and Pain Control in Dentistry.
