Psychological Therapies for Common Mental Health Problems course



This session considers some of the psychological therapies that are available for adults and why they should be proposed to patients with common mental health problems. It recommends which therapies are appropriate for which conditions and suggests what you can achieve during a 10 minute consultation.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the range of evidence-based psychological therapies that are available
- Identify which patients with common mental health conditions can be helped by which psychological therapies
- Demonstrate how to deliver a psychologically-based structured approach to a 10 minute consultation

Liz England is a salaried GP working in a busy inner city practice in Birmingham, and a Mental Health Clinical Lead for SWB CCG. She qualified in 2004 and has worked in this practice from 2005. Her interests include all age mental health, learning disabilities and teaching medical students.
Until recently, she was involved in research as an academic GP at the University of Birmingham, where she completed her PhD on First Episode Psychosis. She has been published in several books and journals and has been the recipient of a number of NIHR awards. She is now focusing on clinical commissioning of mental health services with SWB CCG. She is also the current RCGP Mental Health and Whole Person Care lead and co-chairs the Joint Commissioning Panel for Mental Health.


Barbara Noble has been a GP in Wolverhampton for the last 28 years. She works in an inner city practice that serves a diverse population. She trained in Liverpool and after some jobs there she worked in South Africa before settling in Wolverhampton. She is a trainer and has been a GP Tutor and Clinical Lecturer at The University of Birmingham. Her clinical interests include women’s health and drugs misuse. At present she is studying for a MSc in Clinical Nutrition.
