Radiology – Integrated Training Initiative (R-ITI) | Paediatrics | Recurrent Chest Infections
Recurrent Chest Infections
Session Overview
Description
The session covers recurrent chest infections in children and includes chest infections which are slow to resolve.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Name important causes of recurrent chest infections in children
- Recognise signs of infection on chest radiographs (CXRs)
- Review serial CXRs
- Suggest further imaging
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:
- Interpret a paediatric CXR and recognise air space consolidation
This session deals with recurrent infections in children. You will first briefly review important causes of chest infections in children. Most disease entities are covered in detail in other sessions.
This session will give you a more practical approach from the point of the radiologist rather than a list of causes which can easily be found by reading a book. The case study section is an important part of the session and gives you some insight into how multi-disciplinary team meetings try to analyse cases and solve problems.
Conditions associated with recurrent infections
Some underlying conditions predispose children to recurrent infections. These can be grouped into a few categories:
- Aspiration syndromes
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic lung disease
- Congenital and acquired immune deficiencies
- Congenital cardiopulmonary and airway abnormalities
